Flower of the Day: Alstroemeria

  • Common Name: Peruvian Lily or Lily of the Incas
  • Botanical Name: Alstroemeria
  • What they look like: Similar appearance to lillis with six tepals that are fairly alike. In some varieties, 2 of the tepals are larger and are contrasted with vivid colors.
  • Colors it comes in: These flowers can be found in yellow, salmon, purple, orange, pink, red, white, cream, and peach; among others. the flowers are spotted or striped with contrasting colors and patches.
  • Season Available: Alstroemerias are very accessible flowers found year round.
  • Where it is Grown: They grow predominately in central Chile or Eastern Brazil. In Chile, they are winter-groiwng and in Brazil they are summer-growing. They are however grown in Europe, primarily the UK and Holland.
  • Type of Flower Form: Fairly simmetrical and circular/oval.
  • How it is Sold: In groups of 10 stems.
  • Retail Price: $7.75-$8.75
  • Vase Life: 2 Weeks
  • Special Care: Need plenty of water.
  • Meaning: Friendship and devotion.
  • Interesting Facts: The leaves on the flower twist up from the base, so the bottom of the leaf is actually facing up.
  • Usually Seen in What Type of Design: Usually seen in either traditional, contemporary or wedding designs.
